The Shoulder Season

Late summer is always both a fashion challenge and opportunity

In my book late summer is always both a fashion challenge and opportunity.  It’s 100 degrees outside as I sit and write this, but school has started and the calendar says September, so pink and green just don’t seem right.  There is no way I’m putting on anything with long sleeves yet, and rust and forest green at this point troubles me.  Plus my closet, and I bet yours, hasn’t been “turned” for the season, so there’s still a lot of very bright, perky pieces in there.

What to do?  Well, you could be a rebel, dig your heels in like one of my friends who’s refusing to come back from the beach this year and just keep wearing your Lily.  Go ahead, I truly won’t judge.  I wish I had the guts because summer is too short.  But if you’re like me you need to find a way to get through the next few weeks feeling comfortable but also chic as the season changes.

Which brings me to shoulders…there were lots of them out this summer– both in off the shoulder tops and dresses and in the cut out “cold shoulder” look.  This trend continues into fall, and there are many great options in tops, dresses, blouses, and sweaters.  We’ll have them all in our fall 2016 collection at Poppy.

For now, keep wearing any of your summer versions in season-neutral colors like white, black, or navy and pair them with shorts, jeans or skirts as the weather dictates.  Toss a wrap in a hot orange or wine color in your bag in case it turns cool, and you’re good to go!  Even though the easy pace of summer may be giving way to shorter days, try to take a little time to enjoy the sun on your face and the breeze in your hair—you’ll be Holiday shopping before you know it!
